Gold Coast shortlist

Eleven rides worth knowing

Ordered by local consensus, from flat coastal cruises through to the hinterland climbing bucket list.

11 of 11 routes

01 Intermediate

The clearest local valley recommendation

Currumbin Alley to Cougal Cascades Return

43.9km
279metres up

A scenic out-and-back, steady endurance, creek and rainforest views

Route notes

A straightforward ride from Currumbin Alley to the end of Currumbin Creek Road at Cougal Cascades, then back the same way. Local riders repeatedly nominate it as a Gold Coast staple. Geometry was generated from OpenStreetMap road data with BRouter's fast-bike profile.

Surface
Sealed road
Watch for
Currumbin Creek Road narrows inland and can flood after heavy rain. Turn around at the Cougal Cascades car park and check park/road notices first.
02 Hard, short climb

The signature southern Gold Coast climb

Currumbin to Tomewin Return

30.5km
476metres up

A compact climbing session and quiet valley roads

Route notes

A compact out-and-back from Currumbin Creek Road to the Queensland–New South Wales border via Tomewin Mountain Road, including the famous steep wall near the start.

Surface
Paved road
Watch for
Tomewin's opening wall is steep and the road is narrow. Descend within sight distance, expect vehicles and start early.
03 Hard

The classic northern hinterland lookout climb

Beechmont Plateau Return

54km
673metres up

A sustained climb, ridgeline views and a rewarding descent

Route notes

A return ride from the central coast through Nerang to the Beechmont lookout. The long, consistent climb is one of the region's most frequently recommended road-cycling objectives.

Surface
Sealed road
Watch for
The approach through Nerang can be busy at peak times. The mountain descent has bends, changing shade and little shoulder.
04 Very hard

The Gold Coast climbing bucket-list ride

Best of All Lookout via Springbrook

59.1km
1,251metres up

Experienced climbers, rainforest and a summit lookout

Route notes

A demanding return climb from Mudgeeraba through Springbrook to Best of All Lookout, with more than 1,200 metres of ascent and a high-elevation rainforest finish.

Surface
Paved mountain road
Watch for
A long mountain climb with steep sections, limited shoulder and rapidly changing weather. Shaded descents can stay wet and slippery.
05 Very hard

The complete Springbrook mountain loop

Springbrook and Hinze Dam Loop

64.2km
1,463metres up

A serious climbing day combining Springbrook, Pine Creek Road and Hinze Dam

Route notes

Bicycle Queensland's hard road loop climbs to Springbrook, descends Pine Creek Road and returns via Hinze Dam. It is the pack's biggest concentrated climbing challenge.

Surface
Paved mountain road
Watch for
This is a high-consequence mountain ride with long climbs and descents. Pine Creek Road can carry traffic and debris; take lights, spares, water and food.
06 Intermediate–hard

The best all-round coast-and-hills sampler

Mermaid Beach Hinterland Sampler Loop

53km
588metres up

Rolling terrain, a mixed workout and a coastal finish

Route notes

A balanced loop that warms up along the coast before turning inland through rolling rural roads, then returns to the beachfront for a flatter finish.

Surface
Sealed coastal and hinterland roads
Watch for
Expect traffic interfaces when leaving and re-entering the coast, punchy climbs inland and busy shared-path sections near the beach.
07 Intermediate–hard

A favourite rolling southern-valley loop

Tallebudgera Valley Loop

62.1km
651metres up

A longer scenic loop without a full Springbrook ascent

Route notes

A fully paved loop from the southern coast through the Tallebudgera Valley, pairing rolling hinterland roads with a return toward Coolangatta.

Surface
Paved road
Watch for
Valley roads can be narrow and have limited shoulder. Ride early, hold a predictable line and take care on blind bends.
08 Easy–intermediate

The flat southern-coast training ride

Gold Coast to Tweed Heads Coastal Return

44km
92metres up

Recovery, endurance pace, beaches and café stops

Route notes

A mostly flat coastal out-and-back linking Mermaid Beach with Tweed Heads via the southern Gold Coast, suited to easier days and steady aerobic riding.

Surface
Sealed road, bike lanes and coastal links
Watch for
Bike lanes are not continuous and major junctions can be busy. Coastal wind can make the return leg much harder than the numbers suggest.
09 Intermediate–hard

A varied central-to-northern endurance loop

Central Gold Coast Endurance Loop

68km
570metres up

Rolling country roads, Upper Coomera and a coastal return

Route notes

A medium-long loop through Nerang and Upper Coomera that returns via Southport and the coast, combining rolling climbs with flatter kilometres.

Surface
Sealed road
Watch for
The route crosses busy suburban and arterial-road environments before reaching quieter hinterland roads. Start early and use lights.
10 Intermediate

The practical northern-suburbs loop

North Gold Coast Loop

56.4km
479metres up

A mid-length training ride with early hills and a flatter finish

Route notes

A paved Ashmore–Upper Coomera loop with most of its climbing early and a steadier return, curated as part of Trek's Gold Coast Great Rides collection.

Surface
Paved road
Watch for
Northern growth-area roads can be busy and conditions change with construction. Check current roadworks and avoid peak commuting periods.
11 Easy

The relaxed Tweed coast option

Kingscliff Coastline Cycleway

33.4km
135metres up

Easy kilometres, coastal scenery and newer riders

Route notes

A low-climbing Tweed coastline route through Kingscliff and the southern coastal settlements, included as the pack's relaxed NSW option.

Surface
Sealed cycleway and local roads
Watch for
This is a shared-path-oriented route rather than a fast group ride. Expect pedestrians, driveway crossings, sand and storm debris.
